Before Bernice Sherrod-Dumas became an N-HANCE franchise owner, she had never owned a business. After working as an accountant for 40 years in corporate America and NATO, Dumas was ready for something different. With a house full of unfinished wood furnishings, Dumas sought out businesses that could bring her wildest woodworking visions to life at an affordable price, but she was never able to find a business to provide what she was looking for. This sparked in her the call to pursue her passion for woodworking and go into business for herself.

How did you go from accounting to cabinetry refinishing?

Dumas: After working for 40 years as an accountant, I’d decided that I had enough of working for someone else and that it was time to take some risks. I’ve always had a passion for woodwork and had a house full of unfinished work when we were going through a renovation. I sought out businesses to finish them, but none of them worked for me. I wanted everything customized a certain way and, unfortunately, that was just not happening. 

Ultimately, I decided it was time to go into business for myself and N-HANCE turned out to be the best thing I ever did. I love the fact that I get to reinvent myself. Four years later and I’m still reinventing myself. It’s been challenging, but I have enjoyed it. We’re focusing on our employees and building with hopes that we will leave something significant behind. 

What makes N-HANCE unique in comparison to its competitors?

Dumas: As I previously said, I couldn’t find someone to bring to life what I wanted in my home. No one could provide me with unique, personalized work. It’s amazing because now I’m providing that very service and experience to our customers. This N-HANCE franchise focuses on the customer and customization. We’re all about providing a unique experience, a unique product, and bringing to life whatever they can imagine. Additionally, we do this in a high-quality  way, which supersedes the work of our competitors. 

What are you most proud of?

Dumas: I’m most proud of making our customers happy. It’s amazing to present a customer with whatever it is they have imagined. We’re providing them with a service that they cannot get anywhere else. Now they can get certain variations of it with paint, but the quality we provide is not there. This is what allows us to continuously stand out in comparison to our competitors. No one does what we do better than us. We are truly the best at what we do. I’m really happy with my decision to open an N-HANCE franchise. It’s been a lot of fun and very rewarding.
